Lansiné Kouyaté, born in 1968 in the vibrant town of Kangaba, Mali, emerges from a rich lineage of djelis (griots), renowned for their oral tradition and profound musical heritage. As a talented singer-songwriter and a virtuoso of the balafon, a traditional instrument akin to a wooden xylophone, Kouyaté seamlessly blends the rich tapestry of his cultural roots with contemporary influences. His eclectic artistry bridges the melodic rhythms of Mandinka music with the energetic vibes of Afro-fusion, Afro-jazz, Afro-pop, and folk-pop.

Through his music, Lansiné not only honors his heritage but also invites listeners on a sonic journey that transcends borders, celebrating the diversity of African musical traditions while engaging with global sounds. His unique ability to weave storytelling into his compositions reflects the essence of the griot tradition, making his work both poignant and universally relatable. As an ambassador of Malian culture, Kouyaté continues to captivate audiences around the world, enriching the world music scene with his innovative spirit and heartfelt performances.

According to Jean Philippe Rykiel, the blind keyboard virtuoso, Lansiné Kouyaté's vibrant laughter, joy, and humor resonate deeply in his balafon playing, adding a unique layer of expression to his music. Their collaboration spans over two decades, during which they've embarked on a creative journey, exploring innovative soundscapes that incorporate various approaches, including the integration of electronic instruments.

This ongoing partnership has culminated in an exciting new duo project that artfully combines the traditional sounds of the balafon with the rich harmonies of the piano. This collaboration pushes the boundaries of their respective instruments, creating a transcendent, a cappella ensemble that captivates listeners with its depth and texture. Through this fusion, Kouyaté and Rykiel not only celebrate their musical heritage but also craft an exhilarating experience that transcends cultural barriers, inviting audiences into a world where tradition meets contemporary experimentation in a harmonious embrace.
